There are three types of walks : potty walk, training walk, and free walk. Potty walks are only for gong to the bathroom. they should only last about 5 min at a time. Training walks are for, well training If the dog pulls, DON'T yank on the collar and pull him back. That's just going to hurt him and he really wont grasp the safe concept. Either stop like you mentioned and wait for them to stop pulling or you can turn and walk the opposite way. Dogs want to go forward, but if you keep turning around they wont go anywhere and will soon learn that pulling means not continuing the adventure. These normally can last around 30 minutes or however long your training sessions are. Last is a free walk which is usually the longer walks or the real exercise walks. The key to these walks though and really all walks is that you need to set a time frame. So say you have a bigger dog and you plan to walk for an hour, that hour starts as soon as you put the leash on. So if it takes you 30 min to get out the door (if the dog keeps trying to pull out the door, which is a no no) then the rest of the walk will only last 30 min. They need to learn the rules in order to fully enjoy their time on the walks.
