I taught my cat to learn tricks. I teach her with positive reinforcement, meaning I don't hit her if she does something wrong. I use a clicker (the same kind you use for dogs) and treats. Kali will eat anything really, but she especially loves raw meat (yes you can feed them to your pets and no they won't get sick), or Temptations cat treats. The first trick I taught her was "touch", where I teach her to touch anything I tell her to. The Touch command helps with other tricks (such as pray or crawl). She caught onto that quick. The next one I taught her was high-five. A little harder to do, but now she does it without fail. The next one I taught her was spin. This one was very difficult. It took around 3 months to teach her. I finally used some shrimp as bait and she wanted the treat so bad so spun for me. So now she does it without fail. Currently i'm teaching her to lay down, but it's not 100% yet.
Cats are smart creatures and can be trained. I don't get why people say dogs are smarter and better. I love dogs as well and when I didn't have a dog to train I trained Kali. Worked out perfectly. Now Kali is an affectionate, pampered kitty, and still will spin for tricks.
Here is a video of her doing high five and spin.
